Ash and Sweetgrass Baskets by Sarah Sockbeson

from $1,100.00

Sarah Sockbeson, Penobscot, has been an artist her entire life. Even at a young age, Sarah was intrigued by Native art in particular. Being Penobscot, she had seen baskets in museums and her family members' homes and was always fascinated by them.

She was told stories about her great-grandmother, who was a basketmaker in the early 1900s. She wanted to be a part of this tradition, but unfortunately, in her family, it was not passed down to her generation. Sarah still found ways to practice art, and in high school, she began painting and experimenting with various mediums.

Although Sarah uses traditional materials and techniques, her style comes from where she lives today, in this modern society.

Basketry, to her, is a fine art, and for the tradition to survive, it must evolve. It is important to Sarah that her work appeals to a modern audience while remaining true to cultural traditions.

She takes pride in every project and constantly strives to improve. When she creates something that surpasses her initial vision, she feels a real sense of accomplishment.
